summer garden

I found some pictures that I took last summer of my parents’ garden in the south of Sweden. Seeing this pictures, I just can’t wait for the summer!

My dad grows grapevines on the roof of the terrace which he actually also makes wine of – despite the Swedish weather!

kitchen garden dream

Oh I would like a little garden where I can grow my own vegetables, fruit and berries!

This picture is from the float project but I intend  to upload some pictures soon from Horniman park which has a nice herb garden and see if I have some pictures of my parents’ garden.

Café interiors in Forest Hill & Dulwich

Finally some beautiful weather! We went out for a walk and after spending some time in Horniman Park we went to Dulwich, which has such a cute high street with lots of design shops and cafés. We had a drink at Le chandelier, which has a lovely decor, look:

Later on, when walking back to Forest Hill, we found this new little café on Dartmouth Rd. It had just opened that same day. I think they said it was going to be called Le Montage, and there’s going to be an art gallery and a garden opening in May

50s kitchen

The Swedish interior magazine Hus & Hem’s latest issue is a special retro issue – i love!

One article is on a modern 50s kitchen:

The house is very close to where my parents live and where I grew up in Malmo! It’s from 1948, but the current owners redid the kitchen 2005 with the help of a carpenter. The carpenter got them all the vintage details.

The 50s interior design trend

Trends come and go but one interior design trend that doesn’t seem to let go at all is the mid century, 50s design. People scan vintage stores for sideboards, teak tables and vinyl chairs, pay extreme amounts for an Arne Jacobsen piece, there are tons of reproductions and a lot of our new furniture is inspired by the 50s, for example Ikea’s Stockholm Spring 2013 collection.

Second world war had just ended, the future was bright and focus was on family and home. People wanted new furniture with modern, sleek design. They wanted colours and patterns. Houses were smaller than before the war which meant furniture needed to be more practical. Stack-able chairs and smart storage were introduced.

The style in bullets:

  • open plan
  • fitted kitchens
  • stacking furniture
  • new materials – PVC, Formica, fibreglass, rubber, melamine, aluminium, vinyl, plastics
  • abstract, geometric patterns
  • animal and nature prints
  • smart storage
  • pastel colours
  • bright colours

Check out how I renovated a teak sideboard here and the 50s dining table we recently bought here.

Johanna’s colourful retro home

This is my friend Johanna’s apartment in Sweden. It’s a lovely little studio with lots of colour, retro feel and character. It’s in Slottstaden i Malmo, close to both city and beach.

Even if it’s a studio it has a separate kitchen and a separate part of the living room is for the bed, so it doesn’t feel small – perfect compact living!

Johanna has bought most of her furniture from second hand shops and flea markets. Some pieces are inherited. This, in combination with the green and yellow colours, has created a perfect retro feeling.

retro record player

Her favourite thing in the flat (apart from her cat Stella of course) is the old record player which she found in a second hand shop.

swiss chalet interior design

I’m in Geneva because of a project so I don’t have access to most of my own pictures. But as I’m in Switzerland and spring is still far away in most places, I will give you some Swiss chalet home decor inspiration.

This one is the beautiful holiday chalet of Belgian antique dealer and interior designer Axel Vervoordt.
